Why choose us

For decades, SPCALC has served adult learners across San Patricio County by providing free and low-cost literacy, GED, and ESL programs in welcoming community spaces. We provide an opportunity for further growth to those adults wishing to improve their basic listening, speaking, reading, writing, and/or mathematical skills needed to solve problems encountered in daily life.

“I left school when I was a sophomore in high school when my father got sick and he couldn't work anymore. At the age of 67, I decided I needed to finish what I should have years ago.”

-Robert, GED Student

Student Success Story

Joey

After six years of determination and self-study, Joey achieved her goal of earning her GED through the San Patricio County Literacy program. Despite life challenges that interrupted her education as a teenager, she never gave up on herself or her future.

Joey entered the program needing only her Math test to graduate. Along the way, she became a source of encouragement for other students—sharing study tips, donating her GED books, and reminding others that success is possible with persistence and support.

Even after she received her GED, Joey demonstrated her leadership skills by taking the initiative time to mentor and support two fellow students.

Today, Joey is a proud GED graduate living in Portland, Texas, and pursuing her dream of becoming a licensed tattoo artist. Her journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.

“A walk in my shoes”

Texas ranks 49 out of 50 among states in the percentage of the adult population with a high school education; 16% of adults over 25 in Texas don’t have a high school diploma or equivalent. Tens of thousands of Texans are on waiting lists for basic education in any given year.
